A Village with a Fascinating History

Although modern Plagia is a thriving village, its story stretches back centuries. The present settlement developed after residents gradually relocated from nearby Palia Plagia (Old Plagia), a hillside village situated a few kilometres inland. Following the devastating earthquake of 1966 and subsequent landslides, many homes became unsafe, prompting families to move closer to the coast and establish the village in its current location. Over the following decade, changing economic conditions accelerated the transition, and Old Plagia was eventually abandoned.

Today, visitors can still explore the atmospheric remains of Old Plagia. Stone-built houses, narrow pathways, old churches and a traditional village fountain remain as reminders of a once-thriving community. Surrounded by almond trees, olive groves and mountain scenery, the abandoned settlement offers a fascinating glimpse into rural Greek life of previous generations and has become a favourite destination for photographers, walkers and history enthusiasts.

The area's history extends even further back into antiquity. On the nearby Sterna peninsula lie the remains of ancient fortifications believed by many historians to be associated with the ancient Corinthian settlement of Sollion. During the Classical period, Sollion played an important strategic role in the region and is mentioned in connection with events of the Peloponnesian War. Archaeological remains scattered throughout the area reflect the rich cultural heritage that has shaped this corner of western Greece for more than two millennia.
